Looming Large Festival, Flensburg

Mural Festival Flensburg Molly Hawkins

The Looming Large Festival showcased the talent of nine remarkable female mural artists, including headliner Molly Hawkins, enriching Flensburg's cultural scene and highlighting women's contributions to the arts. The event featured a diverse array of captivating artworks, emphasizing the importance of female visibility in the art world.

Molly was charged with transforming a 10m x 8m wall at Sparkasse Bank into a vibrant mural. Drawing inspiration from Flensburg's surroundings, she integrated local elements such as the city's vivid colors, distinctive architecture, and the wooden Danish boats docked in the harbor. The deep blues of the fjord waters and the lush warm oranges and yellows of the city buildings provided a stunning color palette, while the architectural details offered intriguing forms for her design. Over the course of a week, her artwork unfolded in public view, fostering a direct connection between the artist, her creative process, and the community—an experience further enhanced by a documentary that captured these moments and included interviews with the participating artists.

Molly's participation in the Looming Large Festival demonstrated her adeptness at navigating complex themes and enhancing cross-language communication. Her experience highlighted her ability to bridge cultural and linguistic barriers, effectively communicating across languages in a primarily English-speaking capacity.
